Homemade Biscuits from The Caldwell House

2 cups sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
4 tablespoons butter or shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
About 3/4 cup milk

Sift flour once, add baking powder and salt, then sift again. Cut in shortening or butter.  (You may want to use your hands to rub the butter into the flour).

Add milk gradually, stirring until a soft dough is formed.

Turn out on slightly floured board and lightly “knead” for 30 seconds, enough to shape.

Roll 1/2 inch thick and cut with 2 inch floured biscuit cutter.

Bake on ungreased sheet in a 400 degree oven for 12-15 minutes.

Makes 12 2” biscuits.  You can also make tiny tea biscuits only 1 1/2 inches wide.

Abbeville Christmas Stroll – 2012

Abbeville Christmas Stroll, 2012
Thursday, December 6, 2012
5:30 – 8:00 pm
The Christmas Stroll is an event created to increase pedestrian traffic in the Main Street district.  It began with a partnership between the Downtown Business Association and the Main Street program. It is now organized by the Main Street Promotion Committee who solicits sponsors and encourages businesses to participate.    It is held the first Thursday in December from 5:30pm till 8:00pm (December 6, 2012).  Shoppers stroll under the twinkling white lights that illuminate the buildings and the trees as they visit the shops and businesses and later dine in one of our excellent restaurants.
The uniqueness of this event is that each participating merchant pays a fee for an advertising campaign. Each merchant’s fee  not only covers the cost of advertising  and promoting the event  but it also enrolls the participant as a validation stop on the Stroll route.  Along with their payment, we ask that the  provide entertainment and refreshment. Musical entertainment this year will feature Ike Funderburk and Dennis Faulk, the Bayou Chorus Blend, the Randall Family Band and, of course, Santa Claus.
Each attendee is given a Stroll card and the goal is to get them into each business by having the card validated.  After the stroller has completed the route and their card has been validated, their stroll card is then placed in a box which qualifies them for a chance to win the gift basket give away at the end of the evening. This is an annual event and we have had 20 to 26 participants each year.
This retail activity showcases their products and services.  The event is used to attract visitor and shoppers to an old fashioned family holiday event.
The Stroll really kicks off the holiday season in Abbeville and puts everyone in the holiday spirit. The bonus is that the cash register does ring up sales for the weeks that follow.
